Is prednisolone the same as prednisone?

    Similarities
Prednisone and prednisolone are both man-made glucocorticoids.
They are both used to treat many similar conditions
They are both generally considered to be equally effective. However, if you have a liver condition, prednisolone is usually preferred. This is because liver enzymes are used to convert prednisone to prednisolone
    They both have similar interactions
They both have same side effects.
    Their dosing schedules are similar.

    Differences
Prednisone is as a prodrug. A prodrug is a drug that is inactive on its own and would need to be broken down (metabolized in the body) an active drug. This conversion is done by liver enzymes and the active drug it is converted to is prednisolone. In other words, prednisolone is the active form of prednisone.
Prednisone may be cheaper than prednisolone.
