Platelets are small particles in your blood. A side effect of many types of chemotherapy causes the body to stop producing enough platelets temporarily. Platelets only have a shelf life of 5 days \u2014 making them extra special because the need is constant. By the time platelets are donated, tested, and sent to hospitals, they must be transfused very quickly.<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-heading stk-block-heading stk-block-heading--v2 stk-block stk-1f0cabf\" id=\"where\" data-block-id=\"1f0cabf\"><style>.stk-1f0cabf .stk-block-heading__bottom-line{height:4px !important;width:90px !important;background-color:var(--theme-palette-color-1, #be1e2d) !important;margin-top:10px !important;}.stk-1f0cabf {margin-bottom:0px !important;}<\/style><h3 class=\"stk-block-heading__text\">Where<\/h3><div class=\"stk-block-heading__bottom-line\"><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-cc7e02d\" data-block-id=\"cc7e02d\"><p class=\"stk-block-text__text\">Platelet donations must be made at a MEDIC donation center. We are unable to take these types of donations at community drives. MEDIC has four donation centers located in Downtown Knoxville, Farragut, Athens, and Crossville.<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-heading stk-block-heading stk-block-heading--v2 stk-block stk-a908abb\" id=\"when\" data-block-id=\"a908abb\"><style>.stk-a908abb .stk-block-heading__bottom-line{height:4px !important;width:79px !important;background-color:var(--theme-palette-color-1, #be1e2d) !important;margin-top:10px !important;}.stk-a908abb {margin-bottom:0px !important;}<\/style><h3 class=\"stk-block-heading__text\">When<\/h3><div class=\"stk-block-heading__bottom-line\"><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-462249c\" data-block-id=\"462249c\"><p class=\"stk-block-text__text\">Because the body reproduces platelets so quickly, platelet donors can donate up to 24 times a year. Platelet appointment times vary by location.<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-heading stk-block-heading stk-block-heading--v2 stk-block stk-2f3add6\" id=\"who\" data-block-id=\"2f3add6\"><style>.stk-2f3add6 .stk-block-heading__bottom-line{height:4px !important;width:63px !important;background-color:var(--theme-palette-color-1, #be1e2d) !important;margin-top:10px !important;}.stk-2f3add6 {margin-bottom:0px !important;}<\/style><h3 class=\"stk-block-heading__text\">Who<\/h3><div class=\"stk-block-heading__bottom-line\"><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-a7ee040\" data-block-id=\"a7ee040\"><p class=\"stk-block-text__text\">Donors with type A+, B+, AB+, and AB- make the best platelet donors but those with O+ and A- blood can also donate. Women who have been pregnant may carry an antibody preventing them from donating platelets. Although this antibody presents no risk to the person who has it, in sporadic cases, it could create complications for the person receiving her platelets. All women must undergo a blood test to determine whether they are eligible to donate platelets (the blood test appointment will be a sample-only appointment).<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-heading stk-block-heading stk-block-heading--v2 stk-block stk-d7ebcac\" id=\"how\" data-block-id=\"d7ebcac\"><style>.stk-d7ebcac .stk-block-heading__bottom-line{height:4px !important;width:60px !important;background-color:var(--theme-palette-color-1, #be1e2d) !important;margin-top:10px !important;}.stk-d7ebcac {margin-bottom:0px !important;}<\/style><h3 class=\"stk-block-heading__text\">How<\/h3><div class=\"stk-block-heading__bottom-line\"><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-daa9fd3\" data-block-id=\"daa9fd3\"><p class=\"stk-block-text__text\">Platelets are donated through a process called apheresis. If you\u2019ve ever donated on the Alyx machine, you know what we are talking about. The donor\u2019s blood goes into a machine where it is spun rapidly until it is separated into red blood cells, plasma, and platelets. Most of the plasma and red cells are returned to the donor leaving behind a small bag of platelets. The process is not painful. The needle used is smaller than the needle used for whole blood.
